Thursday 9th February - Cake

It's  a bit cooler this morning and overcast. R is a bit better today so we pack a picnic and head for the hills. This road heads mostly due north from Maspalomas, and appears to have been rained on. Our initial target is San Bartolome so we can enjoy the highly rated coffee and cake shop. It is good and the cake is amazing.
Our route takes us into the mountains, shrouded in clouds to start with but then the skies open and we get great views down towards the south west coast. One of the big ticket spots on this tour is Roque Bentayga, a short detour off the main road.
This is where the original Canarians lived, about 2000 years ago. Lunch is alfresco in the car park and we get to watch a pair of kestrels.
We are heading for a town called Tejeda, the centre of the almond business. Last week was the almond blossom festival so we imagined that we might see something petaĺly. Nada. Nix. Rien. Good job that we saw  some earlier.
Our drive home took us via a caldera, quite a small one according to the blurb.  A mere 80 metres deep but very spectacular.
Tonight we dine Espanol.
Today's  research beer is the slightly smarter one from Mercadona. An extra 7 cents per can.  Is it worth it?  Absolutely. Decent flavour and good body.  **** (and a half) out of five.
