Friday 17th February - Dirty Stop Outs

We sleep in well beyond dawn this morning but it is not a problem as there is nothing pressing planned today. Tonight is a different matter as we intend to hit the fleshpots of Playa del Ingles. The morning swim is under cloudy skies but these soon clear and it is another pleasantly warm sunny day. Today's adminstrative tasks include doing a small shop and drawing up a plan for next week when we will have a car. Today is probably the clearest view that we have had of the interior mountains that we have had during our stay.
After yesterday's birding success we opt for another trip to the Maspalomas Botanic Gardens which is close by the supermarket that we use when pedestrians. The birds are not out in force today but we do get to see the man who dusts the cactii in action.
We haven't had a quiz on this blog and this isn't much of one. Can you spot the mistake on the photo below?
Today's revised routine means an earlier outing for the Beer of the Day. This one is one of the pricier ones, brewed on the neighbouring island of Tenerife. It's 5.7% ABV but doesn't really taste like it. In fact D rates it as not very Especial.
** (out of five).
With the exception of this modest tipple we resist the temptation to pre-load for our evening out and set out at 17.00 to catch the shuttle bus. For once it is on time and we are soon in Downtown Playa del Ingles. First stop is the ATM that doesn't want to charge us a €7.50 transaction fee for a cash withdrawal. Then we go for a couple of Friday night beers and recall the days when we posted a pic from a different bar every Friday. This bar was a bit different.
The guy in charge worked very hard to attract customers and did a great deal on draught Victorias. Sadly, despite describing itself as a Tapas Bar, there was no food on offer other than Pringles. We demurred.
A spot of online research suggested a tapas place in San Fernando, about twenty minutes walk away, and a bit off the tourist beat. R is happy with this so we go for it.
Taberna El Picoteo is well worth the walk. The menu is interesting, the prices reasonable and el jefe is amusing. D almost ruins things when he tells the guy "Quiero hablar Espanol". El jefe sighs and says "OK" in a somewhat resigned fashion. Inevitably D's Espanol is not up to the mark and we finish up ordering in English.
The tapas is excellent and the service spot on. We shall return. Even better there is a Mercadona ppopposite so we can top up on their excellent €2.20 Rioja. The electric taxi home is not bad at €5.20 and we have completed our night out by 20.18.

  1. Sign should say Viernes Instead of Jueves. Or; change all to Thursday.

I see tortilla española, anchovies, a kind of patatas bravas and sausages ?👍🏻

  2. Correct.

The things that look like sausages are dates wrapped in bacon. The potatoes are a Canarian speciality, served with Mojo sauce. We also had chicken livers and chorizo al vino which arrived a bit later.
